This is the only place in San Francisc I've been to that makes a tomato based clam chowder. I'm sure there are other places, but this is the only one I've tried, and I love it. I went to a clam chowder festival in Santa Cruz and tried 20 different clam chowders, but this place is still my favorite. I like it, because its not extra rich like the typical white clam chowder. It is actually quite sour. The bread bowl it comes in is a plus. I wish they would put more clams in the chowder though, although the clams they use are pretty good quality. I don't taste the grit or stuff from the clams. I wonder why you can't make clam chowder from bigger clams. Everywhere seems to make it from baby clams.
