Off The Grid
Wednesday, July 14th, 2010 at 12:19 amIf you live for street food, Off The Grid is where you wanna be! Fort Mason Center, La Cocina and the SF Cart Project has partnered together to bring an experience in Latin and Asian cuisine to the San Francisco community. Located at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco, Off The Grid is a festive and fun gathering of some of the best food carts and trucks around. You can get your grub on while you sit and enjoy the live free music. They are running all summer on fridays from 5pm-8pm with potential extended hours into the summer. So hearing about this event I had to stop by and check out the food. I brought my wad of cash, knowing it was pretty much gonna be a cash only event. Now I couldn't try everything so forgive me if I don't cover every food truck, cart and stand but I was able to sample a few so I will let you in on which ones were a homerun for me.
The Creme Brulee Stand
One word, AWESOME! Just by looking at the line you can see that the Creme Brulee was one of the more popular vendors. I had the lavender creme brulee and it was amazing. I didn't really think of lavender as a flavor that I would want to eat but my friend had me try it. So, I broke into the crackly sugar top into the delicate lavender infused custard. One taste and I was sold. Can't wait to try some of the other flavors. Next time, I'm going for the Mexican S'mores.
El Porteno
Kung Fu Taco Truck
The best vendor of the ones I tried had to be the Kung Fu Taco Truck. First of all, they have amazing tacos with varieties including Roast Duck and Nun Chuk Chicken served with mango salsa and other fresh toppings. But what makes this the best is that they serve dessert mochi, with flavors like nutella, and peanut butter chocolate. The nutella is definitely my favorite. When I saw it on the menu I thought to myself, what a brilliant combination and had to try one. Once I took a bite, I couldn't get enough of it. I ultimately went back for thirds.
Some mentionables that I wasn't able to try were Chairman Bao and Seoul on Wheels. Seoul on wheels is popular in it's own right so I don't have to say much about them. With the popularity of the Kogi trucks down south, you can't go wrong with a kogi taco. Chairman Bao Bun Truck also seemed pretty popular with a substantial line. I heard mixed reviews about this one but the truck seemed to remain popular throughout the event.
